Pandemic Leads To Increase In Plastic Surgery

More people working from home spend hours on video calls, inevitably looking at themselves for long periods of time and not liking what they see. This has led to an increase in cosmetic surgeries, Doctors calling it the Zoom Boom.

Dr. Michael Wojtanowski, a surgeon at the Ohio Clinic for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, says “When you’re getting ready in the morning and you look in the mirror, that’s five minutes. But when you’re sitting there on a Zoom it’s for prolonged periods of time. So people began to notice a lot of things about their faces that they didn’t really notice before.”

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 15.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2020 alone. Rhinoplasty was the top cosmetic surgery in 2020, with more than 352,000 surgeries performed. The society also reports that Botox was the most sought injectable treatment with more than 4.4 million procedures performed.

Working from home during the pandemic has created an ideal opportunity for people to use that time for surgery and healing.

Doctors believe tummy tucks and liposuction procedures will also increase due to weight fluctuation during quarantine.

Many are wondering if this increased interest in plastic surgery in general and facial procedures, in particular, is going to last once the pandemic is finally brought under control. While this is difficult to predict, most likely, these plastic surgery trends will continue even after the masks are put away.
